Wisconsin Express: Lancaster

Wisconsin Express is a week-long cultural immersion program for college students that takes place every year in May. Participants in Wisconsin Express explore intercultural and interprofessional issues they will encounter as future healthcare professionals. The goal of the program is to encourage students, as they begin their professional careers, to develop personal and group strategies to respond to the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly diverse healthcare system and society at large.

This year's Lancaster site hosted six students pursuing various health focused careers including nursing, pharmacy, pre-med, public health, and public policy. Students spent the week focused on healthcare in prisons and jails, as well as learning about programs that help families and individuals utilize community resources to address issues that could lead to jail or prison time. Participants also explored rural Wisconsin through their lodging, hosted on a working farm, shadowing healthcare professionals in critical access hospitals, and learning about the social determinants of health.

Partner sites visited and presenters include: UW Extension Vernon County, CouleeCap, Vernon Memorial Hospital, INHealth Community Wellness Clinic, UW-Platteville Criminal Justice Department, Prairie due Chein Correctional Facility, WI Secure Program Facility-Boscobel, Grant County Jail, Grant County Public Health Department, Grant County Coordinated Services, Grant County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, Unified Community Services, Grant Regional Hospital
