Scenic Rivers AHEC Hosts First Orientation for NEW AHEC Scholars Program

Scenic Rivers hosted an orientation for its first cohort of AHEC Scholars on January 17, 2019.

AHEC Scholars is a new two-year program for health professions students interested in supplementing their education by gaining knowledge and experience in rural and/or underserved urban settings. The cohort currently consists of 12 students across the state of Wisconsin who are studying various health disciples such as nursing, medicine, public health, occupational therapy, pharmacy, community health, social work and recreational therapy. This diverse group of students will participate in interdisciplinary curricula through online didactic course work and experiential learning activities.

We are excited to begin working with our scholars and community partners to plan experiential learning activities throughout the region. If you're interested in becoming a scholar, there is still time to apply! To learn more visit https://ahec.wisc.edu/ahec-for-students/scholars/.

Thank you to Gundersen Health System for opening up the Barney Boardroom to host the orientation and thank you to Board Member, Martha Scheckel, PhD, RN for sharing first-hand knowledge on the importance of healthcare in rural/underserved areas.
