For this month's student spotlight, we are featuring a student who has attended one of our Health Careers Camps. Learn more about Emma's involvement with Scenic Rivers AHEC and her plans for the future.
Where are you originally from?
West Salem
Where did you attend/or currently are attending school?
West Salem High School
What are your future career/school goals?
I plan to go into nursing.
What was your first experience with AHEC and what did you learn from it?
I went to an AHEC Heath Careers Camp in the summer. I learned many things at this camp. When I started the camp I was set on becoming a pediatrician, now I am leaning more toward being a nurse in the NICU or the PEDICU. Although, I am not one-hundred percent sure on where I want to specialize as a nurse, this camp helped me narrow down my interests of where I would like to work. Not only did this camp help my educational path, but it helped me with my social path as well. At the beginning of the camp I only knew two people, but now I have come out of it with more than six people, I know and still talk to.
Did you continue to participate in any AHEC programs such as camp counselor, AHEC alumni or AHEConnect?
I am a part of the mentoring program right now.
Do you have plans to take advantage of AHEC programs in the future?
I plan to participate in an internship or mentoring program when I get older.
What advice would you give to younger students starting to navigate their future in a health care career?
I would say to keep your mind open to the different fields of medicine, because there is going to be more than one that you like, but only one you love. There is also going to be many jobs that you didn't even know existed, but by going to these camps you are going to learn more about the medical field and jobs in there as a whole.
