Hands on Health Day with Seneca, Wauzeka-Steuben, and Galesville-Ettrick-Trempealeau High Schools

We look to give students as much real-life exposure as we can for each on of our programs. By teaming up with local health organization such as Gundersen for Hands on Health Days, students get to meet with healthcare professionals for individual job shadows.

Students from Seneca High School, Wauzeka-Steuben High School, Galesville-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School participated in job shadows with the Gundersen Health System staff, then headed to the Integrated Center for Education to try their hand at various medical simulations.

Students practiced laparoscopic surgery skills, while testing their ambidexterity and realizing the challenges of looking at a screen to see what you're doing while wanting to look at your hands, but being unable to see them. Participants worked as teams to intubate and bag a manikin, a practicing skill that takes lots of practice. A session on injection safety gave the students a chance to learn about the procedures and protocols in place to ensure vaccine safety and efficacy. An anatomy and physiology lesson rounded out the activities with students by identifying and placing simulated organs in appropriate locations.

Most of the students had not attended a health careers event before today and expressed they enjoyed the hands on activities and spending time with practicing professionals.
