For this month's student spotlight, we are featuring a student who has attended one of our Hands on Health Days. Learn more about Elise's involvement with Scenic Rivers AHEC and her plans for the future.
Where are you originally from?
Galesville, Wisconsin
Where did you attend/or currently are attending school?
Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau High School
What are your future career/school goals?
I will be majoring in Kinesiology at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and then attending Physician Assistant school in the future.
What was your first experience with AHEC and what did you learn from it?
My first experience with AHEC was the Hands on Health day. This was my first time going through a job shadow in a hospital setting, and I learned a lot about what a day in a clinical setting is like. It truly made me realize that I wanted to be involved in the medical field for the rest of my life.
Do you have plans to take advantage of AHEC programs in the future?
I would like to be a camp counselor at the AHEC Health Careers Camp because this camp truly changed my outlook on my future. It was a very fun experience and I want to be by other kids' sides when they experience this.
What advice would you give to younger students starting to navigate their future in a health care career?
Look at every option. I originally thought I was going to go all the way to be a medical doctor, then I switched to wanting to be a nurse, and proceed to get my doctorate in nursing. And after the health career camp, I found what I truly want to do, is be a Physician Assistant. There are so many open doors and the list is endless for ways you can help others and their health. Not only is medical an option, but so are careers like public health, which are very important to society.
