Viterbo Gerontology Partnership

Over the summer months, Scenic Rivers AHEC partnered with Viterbo University School of Nursing to host an intern through Viterbo’s Summer Service Learning Internship.

Scenic Rivers AHEC connected the student, Katie Juen, with regional meal sites to administer surveys. The surveys collected information about what topics might be of interest to meal site participants. Katie compiled the survey data to inform future educational opportunities.

Throughout the fall, Viterbo University Professor, Melanie Johnson, worked with Scenic Rivers AHEC to design a plan for Viterbo nursing students to deliver educational sessions, based on survey areas of interest at sites across the region for their gerontology course. Students have been planning their sessions and began presenting November 14th.

Cashton Meal Site is one of the facilities working with the nursing students. Carol Hultberg, Site Coordinator, said presentations were great, and including local resources is valuable for the participants. The student presenters found it valuable to engage with older adults in the community and enjoyed their experience. The hope it to expand the program to more regional sites in the future.
