Student Spotlight: Kristine Elsen

Where did you attend/or currently are attending school? (high school, university, etc)

I am attending the University of UW - Madison majoring in biology with a certificate in global health.

What would you like to do in healthcare?

Post graduation I would like to earn my DVM and MPH in a duel degree program at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine. Aspiring to specialize in Shelter Medicine with a background in public health, I hope to strengthen communities through policy, practice and education.

What was your first AHEC experience?

My first experience with AHEC was participating in the Wisconsin Express program this summer in Fennimore. Through this experience I was exposed to everything from incarceration healthcare to the healing art of Tai Chi. Most importantly though, my experience served as a reminder to actively seek out opportunities in even the most familiar of communities, as there is always more to learn and explore in Wisconsin.

Do you plan to take advantage of AHEC program in the future?

In the future I plan to be an advocate for AHEC by spreading the word about its programs to community members and peers. Being the President of a Pre-Health Organization on campus, I hope to pass on knowledge regarding what I found to be a great experience. I am also interested in collaborating with AHEConnect, where I can hopefully share insight on what being a pre-healthcare student is all about to younger peers.

What advice would you give to younger students starting to navigate their future in a health care career?

The advice I would give to younger students would be to do their research and stay proactive in planning their future. While in high school, find what your passions are and then try to find a member of the community who has molded a career out of those same passions. In my experience, members of the healthcare community are enthusiastic about what they do and would love to share their experiences/expertise, so don’t be afraid to reach out! If you're still unsure where to start, contact an adviser at your institution of choice, it is never too early to start looking/planning ahead and making connections in the field!
