Student Spotlight: Brooke Stanek

Where did you attend/or currently are attending school? (high school, university, etc)

  • High School: Hillsboro, WI

  • College: University of Madison, WI with majors in Human Development & Family Studies

What would you like to do in healthcare?

I graduated from Hillsboro High School in 2012. In May, I will be graduating from UW-Madison with a B.S. in Human Development & Family Studies. I plan to take a gap year and apply to medical school over the summer with the hope to matriculate in the Fall of 2017. Ultimately, I would like to become a Family Practitioner and return to a rural community similar to where I grew up.

What was your first AHEC experience?

My first AHEC experience was Health Careers Camp the summer before my sophomore year of high school. The experience opened my eyes to the diverse field of healthcare and got me excited about the possibility of one day becoming a doctor!

What other AHEC programming have you utilized or plan to participate in?

This past May, I participated in WI Express, a week long program similar to Health Careers Camp but designed for college students. I also belong to the AHEC Alumni Association and am treasurer of the board. SRAHEC has also been great helping me set up job shadows as I prepare for a career in medicine. I cannot get enough of AHEC programs and the wonderful resources they provide to students!

What advice would you give to younger students starting to navigate their future in a health care career?

Work hard. When you start to doubt yourself, take a step back to recognize, acknowledge and admire everything you have already accomplished!

Brooke and other AHEC Alumni participated in AHEC's Day at the Capital in Madison, Sept. 2015.
