Student Spotlight: Emilee Smith

Where are you originally from?

Tomah, WI

Where did you attend/or currently are attending school? (high school, university, etc)

University of Wisconsin - Madison

What do you hope to do in the future?

I will graduate with a major in Dietetics and Minor in Global Health. I hope to eventually become a dietitian and work for a community-based organization.

What was your first experience with AHEC and what did you learn from it?

My first experience with AHEC was through their Wisconsin Express Program. This program really helped me realize how my future profession could be used in different organizations in the community instead of in the standard hospital setting. I also really enjoyed working with such a wide variety of people and learning their stories.

Did you continue to participate in any AHEC programs such as camp counselor, AHEC alumni or AHEConnect?

After I participated in Wisconsin Express, I became an alumni and am now participating as a mentor in the AHEConnect program.

Do you have plans to take advantage of AHEC programs in the future?

Yes, I plan on still being a part of AHEC alumni and participating in their events held near Madison!

What advice would you give to younger students starting to navigate their future in a health care career?

Be open to different experiences. You may be set on working in a specific setting or profession but take time to broaden your horizons. You may find something that you love and didn't expect to- I know I did!
