Are student job shadows allowed? College students are allowed to job shadow. High school students are allowed to shadow through the La Crosse Health Science Academy or a Scenic Rivers AHEC organized program (such as Hands on Health or Health Careers Camp)
Requirements: Must be at least 18 years of age and a high school graduate (unless shadowing through an organized program with Scenic RIvers AHEC or the La Crosse Health Science Academy). Students who wish to shadow/observe should provide 30 days notice of their intent to shadow and complete all forms. Applications will not be considered until all completed forms are submitted.
Additional Information: It can take up to 15 days to process/approve students shadow application and to coordinate shadow experience. If you have to cancel once your shadow has been scheduled, please call Katie Wing in Medical Education to let her know you are not able to make your shadow. It will be up to each individual department to decide if they are able to reschedule or not. Job shadow attire is business casual unless specified. Job shadow experiences are typically limited to one per student due to the high volume of shadow requests received. This allows all learners the opportunity to shadow within Gundersen Health system.

Job shadows are limited to college-level students who are required to have a shadow experience either as part of their curriculum or as part of their application to a health care related academic program. These are typically no more than 8 hours. High school students are allowed to shadow through the Scenic Rivers AHEC Health Careers Camp or the La Crosse Health Science Academy only.

The northwest Wisconsin region of Mayo Clinic Health System offers job shadowing to area high school students who are considering a career as a physician through the Medical Experience Program. During the program, students job shadow physicians in a variety of specialties in a clinic setting.
Requirements: Prior to applying to the Medical Experience Program, students must volunteer a minimum of 30 hours at Mayo Clinic Health System, be at least 16 years old, and be at least a junior in high school.
Additional Information: Students are required to apply and complete the required volunteer work at Mayo Clinic Health System prior to applying for this program. Volunteer Services will complete background checks, confidentiality forms, and ensure proper immunization history before beginning volunteer work. Applications are due by May 1st each year for participation in the summer session.
