Press Release covering Health Careers Camp 2011:

Sixteen regional high school students selected to participate in the Scenic Rivers Area Health Education Center’s Health Careers Camp 2011 held in La Crosse from June 12-16, 2011. Twenty-two applicants from a ten-county western Wisconsin region applied to the camp that provided students an intensive experience to various health careers. These students had the opportunity to have one-on-one job shadowing experiences at Mayo Clinic Health Systems Franciscan Healthcare, Vernon Memorial Healthcare in Viroqua and Gundersen Lutheran Hospital. Throughout the week, students participated in hands-on learning experiences with the training programs at Viterbo University, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Western Technical College including nursing, medicine, physician assistant, occupational, physical and respiratory therapy, and paramedic and emergency services.

"Their enthusiasm throughout the week was encouraging and contagious. Everyone was sad to go home at the end of the week. They are already asking for a reunion," says Martha McCabe, Camp Director. Thank you to all of the staff, instructors, and departments at the participating institutions who made this week possible for these students and their fellow campers.

General Camp Info:
Both the  La Crosse and Fennimore camps provide lodging and meals for the entire experience.  La Crosse lodging will be on the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse campus and Fennimore lodging will be on the Southwestern Technical College Campus.  Students currently in 9-11th grade are eligible to apply.  The camp application consists of a student essay and application form, parental consent form and two teacher reference forms.  The camp fee is a nominal $75 per camper.  The online application can be accessed from the WI AHEC site (www.ahec.wisc.ed) as well as through the high school guidance departments.

Previous campers have been interested in health careers - some very sure of their future occupation and some unsure, but inquisitive.  The camp provides exposure to health professions training such as nursing school, physician assistant training, physical therapy school, respiratory therapy training, medicine, etc...

Additionally in La Crosse, the students have opportunities to job shadow at two institutions in La Crosse - Gundersen Lutheran Hospital and Franciscan Skemp Healthcare.  The students also travel to a rural community hospital, Vernon Memorial Hosptial in Viroqua, to job shadow in this setting.  Both University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Viterbo University provide student-led campus tours with presentations by their respective admissions departments.

In Fennimore, the students will have the opportunity to be in a very hands-on environment at the new Health Profession Building at SWTC and in their multiple simulation labs.  Job shadowing experiences will be provided at Platteville Hospital, Lancaster Regional Hospital and Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital.

Thank you to all of the partners in 2011 who provided a memorable experience for the students and staff.

We anxiously await a new set of campers and experiences at the 2012 La Crosse and Fennimore Health Careers camps.
